Who are Avera Volunteers?

Volunteers at Avera come from all walks of life: students wanting to explore health care careers, newcomers seeking new connections, or retirees who want to contribute their time and abilities.

Volunteers must be 16 years of age or older. Most volunteers give of their time on a regularly scheduled basis, whether that’s one day a week or several days a week. You can concentrate on one specific job, or volunteer in several areas. We work with you to find the best fit.

What Do Volunteers Do?

  • Help and comfort hospice patients.
  • Rock NICU babies.
  • Welcome patients and visitors.
  • Escort patients to their destination in the hospital.
  • Work in a hospital gift shop.
  • Visit with patients.
  • Sew prayer quilts.
  • Knit caps for newborns.
  • Help with activities at a nursing home.
  • Provide clerical support.

Why Are Volunteers Needed in Health Care?

Volunteers make a difference by comforting and helping others, and just being a friend. Volunteers also do important supportive work to bolster the health care workforce and allow caregivers to spend more time with patients. Volunteers invest in the lives of others and in our community by strengthening local health care.
