Internal Medicine is Adult Medicine
Internal medicine is specialty adult care that includes the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions for those 18 and above. Avera’s board-certified internal medicine physicians, also referred to as internists, and advanced practice providers are interested in adult wellness care, long-term management of chronic medical issues, as well as acute care issues in the late teenage years through senior years.
Internal Medicine vs. Primary Care
While internal medicine and primary care providers both focus on taking care of you as whole, there are some important differences. Internal medicine providers are specifically trained to care and treat both simple and complex conditions from early adulthood through old age. Physicians earn their internal medicine specialty credentials during their three-year residency. These specialists have experience in diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases that commonly affect adults.
