Receive your chemotherapy and infusion treatments under the care of some of the region’s foremost experts in cancer care. Most infusion suites are private and can be made semi-private by opening sliding doors. This gives patients the choice to receive infusions privately, with friends or family, or enjoying the company of other patients. Infusion suites feature custom-built chairs for comfort as well as TV and plenty of outlets for personal electronic devices.

Genetic testing and counseling can help determine if you have higher risk for certain types of cancer based on your DNA and other risk factors, helping you and your family members make informed decisions about prevention measures and screening options for early detection of cancer.

The Avera Breast Center offers 3D mammograms and additional breast diagnostic tests including breast ultrasound and contrast enhanced spectral mammography (CESM), plus breast biopsy at this Sioux Falls location. Inpatient services for cancer patients are available on a specialized floor in the Prairie Center. Although much cancer treatment happens on an outpatient basis, we offer inpatient services for patients who need hospital care during their cancer journey. Sterile treatment rooms come equipped with innovative technology for complex medical needs and close monitoring.

When hospital care is needed for these leading-edge treatments, Avera Cancer Institute offers state-of-the-art space, laboratory technology and expertise, offering high quality care with compassion.

Avera Cancer Institute’s clinical research trials advance the science of medicine, and may provide additional options for cancer patients who qualify for studies we’re enrolling for. Patients always receive evidence-based standard treatment for all types of cancer, yet clinical trials may provide additional options. Avera Specialty Pharmacy offers a variety of specialty medications for complex and/or less common conditions. If you need a specialty medication, this pharmacy supports your care with speed and convenience. Contact this pharmacy if you'd like your specialty medications to be:

• Picked up at a retail Avera Pharmacy the next day.

A lung cancer screening is for patients who do not have symptoms yet, but are at a high risk. The low-dose CT scan looks for lung nodules that may be early lung cancer. This screening offers the best chance of finding it in its earliest and most curable stages.

• Simple, 15-second screening administered by a quick pass across your chest.
• Reduces risk by 20% of lung cancer-related death.
• Recommended for anyone ages 50-77 who has at least a 20-pack-year smoking history, currently smokes or has quit within the last 15 years.

Patient Meals

Patients staying in the hospital will order fresh, chef-prepared meals based on their dietary needs. Additionally, the Women’s Center offers a café stocked with drinks and snacks, among other amenities.

Innerpath Store

This store carries products related to integrative medicine, including aromatherapy oils and nutritional and herbal supplements, and specialty items for cancer patients. The Wig Salon is also located here, and provides natural, high-quality wigs to help cancer patients cope with the physical changes and emotions of hair loss. To ask questions, call 605-322-8470.

We welcome patients and families to engage in the Arts in Healing program to enjoy and relax with a welcome distraction while here. Original collections are on display in the Avera McKennan campus and the Prairie Center. Many pieces, including those by local and regional artists, reflect our home on the Northern Plains and Avera's healing ministry. Visit Sioux Falls' only indoor SculptureWalk, an extension of the downtown walk — part of Avera's commitment to the arts in healing.

The Prairie Center has a changing exhibit with 15 video monitors, displaying sharp, beautiful imagery to inspire a positive environment for patients, their families and visitors.

Music as Medicine

Avera hosts the South Dakota Symphony's Music as Medicine program to bring classical music and musicians to our health care facilities.
