Helmsley Behavioral Health Center
Located as a wing of the hospital, the Helmsley Behavioral Health Center is a state-of-the-art, four-story facility built to fulfill our community’s mental health needs for Sioux Falls and the surrounding area. The center provides high-volume access to 24/7 psychiatric urgent care, residential addiction rehabilitation for youth and partial hospitalization space for youth and adults.
Inpatient Programs for All Ages
We complete a full evaluation for every patient to determine the best level of care. We personalize treatment to meet the unique needs of children (5-12), adolescents (13-17), adults (18-64) and seniors (65+). Designated inpatient programs are designed to support patients of all walks of life in an age-appropriate therapeutic environment that includes:
- Classrooms
- Comfortable lounge
- Gym and workout rooms
- Recreational areas
- Safe outdoor space
- Television areas
- Therapy spaces

Partial Hospitalization Program
If you or a loved one needs stabilizing behavioral health care to help avoid or reduce inpatient hospitalization, take part in Avera Behavioral Health’s Partial Hospitalization Program. This five-day-a-week program supports intensive, comprehensive treatment for youth and adults in and around Sioux Falls, along with the flexibility of remaining an outpatient.
Partial hospitalization involves therapy and treatment during the day while the patient goes home at night. Those in partial hospitalization take part in individual therapy, family meetings and case management and see a psychiatrist for medication management.
Children and adolescents can spend part of their day in school and part of their day making progress on their behavioral health condition that may be impeding their success in school and life.
Bistro & Food Options
The Bistro offers daily breakfast and lunch specials, sandwiches, soups, rolls, fruit, yogurt, snacks, coffee and beverages.
Location: Light Court on the main floor
Hours: Monday – Friday: 6:45 AM – 3 PM
Patient Meals
Patients staying in the hospital will order fresh, chef-prepared meals based on their dietary needs. During an inpatient stay, patients receive three meals a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Beverages and snacks are also available in common areas in inpatient hospital units.
Arts in Healing
Arts in Healing program provides expressive therapy approaches to use creative arts such as storytelling, dance, music, drama, poetry, movement and more to foster personal growth, development and healing. Expressive therapies include:
- Music therapy: Provides healing and expression through creating, singing and moving to and/or listening to music.
- Art therapy: Focuses on the use of art materials such as paint, chalk and markers to explore alternate ways of communicating thoughts and feelings.
- Recreational therapy: Helps reduce depression, stress and anxiety, and recover basic motor confidence and social interaction skills through exercises and stretching.
Visitors & Patients
If you have a loved one who is hospitalized, we encourage family involvement in the healing process. You are welcome to visit your loved one in-person, or please call the front desk and ask to speak to them during hospitalization. Phone calls are not available during meals and group time. If the patient is not available to speak to you, your name and phone number will be provided to them to return the call when they can.
Patients can take part in multiple classes and activities every day following a schedule. They can also exercise, read, shower, play board games and watch television. Able adults staying at the hospital will be responsible for their own laundry and can use our on-site laundry machines. Towels, shampoo, mouth wash and other toiletries are available too. Wheelchair-accessible showers, shower chairs and other accommodations are available upon request.
When a patient leaves after completing their care, they will receive a follow-up phone call to check in and monitor progress. We also provide clinical references if a resident needs ongoing outpatient care with a therapist or another mental health professional.
