A love of science, the intricate anatomy of the hand, and a desire to help others encouraged Kelly McKnight, MD, to provide compassionate and expert services for the hands, wrists and elbows.
She offers her surgical and nonsurgical orthopedic services at Avera Orthopedics in Sioux Falls, SD.
“Hands are how we communicate, create, express ourselves,” said Dr. McKnight. “It’s a huge honor to take care of people’s hands.”
Expert Care in Orthopedic Hand Care
Dr. McKnight strives to relieve pain, stiffness and weakness in the muscles, bones and joints from the fingertips to the elbow.
Whether you’re looking for care, or a referring provider, some of the orthopedic conditions she cares for include fractures, masses, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendon/nerve concerns, trigger finger, golfer’s elbow, Dupuytren’s, elbow pathologies like cubital tunnel, phantom limb pain and much more.
Even though she enjoys the challenge of surgery, that’s not her initial approach when helping her patients. Her philosophy is to meet patients where they are, understand their goals and prognosis, and tailor a plan just for them. A nonsurgical option might be bracing, steroid injections or physical therapy before turning to surgery.
“It’s extremely rewarding to watch patients return to pain-free functioning with their hands,” said Dr. McKnight.
Active Lifestyle
When she’s not at work, Dr. McKnight enjoys spending time outdoors, running, hiking, gardening or fly fishing. Also, she and her family love staying up to date on the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits.
