Neonatology involves caring for infants, soon after birth, if they are born premature, with congenital disorders or with other medical concerns. Katherine Wang, MD, is a neonatologist who practices in the Level IIIB neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center.
Expert Care in Neonatology
Families may be connected with Dr. Wang or other neonatologists if they have an infant who needs specialty care right after birth. This stay may be a few days or several months, depending on the baby’s medical needs. After the baby is discharged, parents are referred to other pediatric specialists for ongoing needs.
“A NICU stay is rarely expected and certainly not wanted by new parents who hope that everything will go smoothly with the birth of their child. Yet we’re here with expertise and state-of-the-art technology when we’re needed to help give these special patients a good start toward a healthy life,” said Dr. Wang.
It can be challenging for parents to have a baby staying in the NICU. In fact, Dr. Wang understands these challenges first hand as one of her own children experienced a NICU stay. She feels it’s important to keep parents well informed on their baby’s progress and condition while also demonstrating compassion for the ups and downs they are going through.
Interests and Family
Dr. Wang is married to David Starks, MD, a gynecologic oncologist with Avera Cancer Institute, and they have two sons. In her free time, she enjoys family time, board games/puzzles, cooking, and eating.
