Growing up on a farm in northwest Iowa, Daniel Van Kalsbeek, DO, was inspired by the various encounters of life and biology — spurring his interest in pursuing medicine.
“Medicine offered a good career in which I could help others,” he said. Today, he serves as specialist in pulmonology and critical care medicine at Avera Medical Group Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine in Sioux Falls, SD.
Expert Care in Pulmonology and Critical Care
“Pulmonology and critical care are unique specialties,” said Dr. Van Kalsbeek. “It utilizes the broad and intimate knowledge of our internal medicine and ICU training, and calls us to care for an entire organ system as both medical and procedural experts.”
Just some of the many conditions he treats include lung disease, lung cancer, fibrosis, COPD, bronchitis, pleural disease and shortness of breath.
Use of Advanced Technology
One aspect of Dr. Van Kalsbeek’s practice that interests him is the latest technology and procedures available for treating patients. For example, bronchoscopies are the bread and butter of a pulmonologist’s work, which can sample lung nodules and aid in diagnosis.
As his patients’ advocate, he strives to be on the forefront of bringing the best and most minimally invasive technology and procedures to Avera’s pulmonology and critical care unit.
Active Lifestyle
Dr. Van Kalsbeek likes hobbies that keep him active and outdoors. As a former collegiate basketball player, he sometimes returns to his roots playing pick-up basketball. He’s also married with a young child, which all parents know, provides “no moments of boredom!”
