Growing up, Shelden Rodrigues, MD, liked solving puzzles, and to him, medicine was a lot like that: you collect information from multiple sources, then find and implement the solution.
“I also enjoyed working with people a lot,” he said. “Practicing medicine is a noble profession where people collaborate to make a difference — that’s why I chose to become a doctor.”
Today, Dr. Rodrigues provides expert care in nephrology and kidney care at Avera Medical Group Nephrology in Sioux Falls, SD.
Expert Care in Kidney Health
As a nephrologist, Dr. Rodrigues deals with many kidney-related conditions, especially the various stages of kidney disease.
“Symptoms can be silent until we reach the advanced stages of the disease,” said Dr. Rodrigues. “But as your provider, I want patients to know that there are treatment options available and we will work together to get the best outcome that we can.”
Some of the kidney conditions he treats include:
- High blood pressure and diabetes
- Blood or protein in the urine
- Urinary tract infections
- Kidney stones
- Renal vascular disease

In his free time, Dr. Rodrigues enjoys watching soccer. He’s also an avid traveler; he’s road tripped through much of the United States and hopes to see much more.
