Joshua Schwind, MD, became interested in health and wellness as an athlete in high school. However, understanding that movement is integral to the whole of human health attracted him to the field of orthopedics and sports medicine.
Today, you’ll find him part of the comprehensive, experienced expert team of Avera Orthopedics.
Before turning to surgery, Dr. Schwind often implements conservative measures, such as injections, medications or physical therapy to address stiffness, dysfunction and pain in the neck or back.
Some of the conditions he addresses include:
- Back injuries
- Fractures
- Lower back pain
- Neck pain
- Ruptured and degenerative discs
- Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction
- Sciatica (nerve pain)
Advanced Technology for Spine Care
The field of spine surgery is rapidly expanding, especially in the use of state-of-the-art technology. Navigational robotics offer surgeons a 3-D view on a screen while they perform surgery, which increases accuracy.
Dr. Schwind has a special interest in diagnosing and treating sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction, a common cause of lower back pain that is often mistaken for lumbar spine or hip issues. Utilizing the latest in minimally invasive techniques, including the iFuse procedure, he helps patients find relief from chronic pain by stabilizing the SI joint and improving overall function.
Active Lifestyle
When Dr. Schwind isn’t at work, he enjoys weightlifting, reading, playing with his dog, spending time with his family.
