Second Opinion Consultations

It’s common for people to want a second opinion regarding a cancer diagnosis. We can help. Submit a second opinion request to our cancer navigation center.

Infusion Center

Receive your chemotherapy and infusion treatments under the care of some of the region’s foremost experts in cancer care. Most infusion suites are private and can be made semi-private by opening sliding doors. This gives patients the choice to receive infusions privately, with friends or family, or enjoying the company of other patients. Infusion suites feature custom-built chairs for comfort as well as TV and plenty of outlets for personal electronic devices.

Mammograms

The Avera Breast Center offers 3D mammograms and additional breast diagnostic tests including breast ultrasound and contrast enhanced spectral mammography (CESM), plus breast biopsy at this Sioux Falls location. Mammograms are an important health screening for women ages 40 and older. Request an appointment at this location or call 605-322-7465.

Lung Cancer Screening

A lung cancer screening is for patients who do not have symptoms yet, but are at a high risk. The low-dose CT scan looks for lung nodules that may be early lung cancer. This screening offers the best chance of finding it in its earliest and most curable stages.

  • Simple, 15-second screening administered by a quick pass across your chest.
  • Reduces risk by 20% of lung cancer-related death.
  • Recommended for anyone ages 50-77 who has at least a 20-pack-year smoking history, currently smokes or has quit within the last 15 years.

Cancer Research & Clinical Trials

Avera Cancer Institute’s clinical research trials advance the science of medicine and may provide additional options for cancer patients who qualify for studies we’re enrolling for. Patients always receive evidence-based standard treatment for all types of cancer, yet clinical trials may provide additional options. Review a wide variety of clinical trials, including several studies currently enrolling patients.

Cancer Genomics

As part of a global consortium, Avera Cancer Institute joins others around the world with a shared goal: curing cancer through targeted therapies, based on the science of genomics.

  • Avera Cancer Institute is the fifth medical institution in the United States to join the Worldwide Innovative Networking (WIN) Consortium.
  • The WIN Consortium is a global network of leading academic, industry, insurance and non-profit research organizations working to make personalized cancer care a reality for patients worldwide.

Arts in Healing

We welcome patients and families to engage in the Arts in Healing program to enjoy and relax with a welcome distraction while here. Original collections are on display in the Avera McKennan campus and the Prairie Center. Many pieces, including those by local and regional artists, reflect our home on the Northern Plains and Avera's healing ministry. We offer free Arts in Healing classes on a regular basis for cancer patients and their loved ones. To learn more, ask your care team.

Oncology Recognition & Clinical Excellence

Avera’s commitment to high-quality cancer care resulted in network accreditations from both the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (COC) and American Society of Clinical Oncology Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI). These accreditations and certifications verify quality and clinical excellence plus our ongoing dedication to performance improvement – ultimately benefiting patient care.

Commission on Cancer (CoC)

This American College of Surgeons has only granted 60 integrated network accreditations nationwide. To earn accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.

QOPI® Certification Program

QOPI Certification emblem

To achieve certification, Avera Cancer Institute had to meet or exceed national quality standards for cancer care. The QOPI Certification Program, LLC, designates Avera Cancer Institute as a large, multi-site practice, which includes the entire Avera Health system and all of our medical oncology and hematology services.
