Growing up, Alyssa Williams enjoyed learning about genetics. She also wanted to work with patients. So after an experience of shadowing in the health care sphere, Williams realized genetic counseling might be calling her name.
Today, she serves patients and families with compassion and expertise at Avera Cancer Institute in Sioux Falls, SD.
“I get the unique opportunity to walk alongside patients through possibly a not-so-fun time,” she said. “I’m able provide education and dispel a lot of misconceptions about genetics.”
Guidance Through Genetic Counseling
Genetic counseling is the art of studying and sharing information about how a patient’s genetics and family history contributes to their health.
She typically sees patients who have a cancer diagnosis or a family history of cancer. After learning their personal health and family health history, she’s able to create a risk assessment that helps determine if a genetic mutation is contributing to an increased risk of cancer.
With this information, Williams and her patients can make a better decision on whether further genetic testing is right for them.
Active Lifestyle
When she’s not at work, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, golfing and reading.
