In college, Scott McPherson, MD, was considering career options. A roommate pursuing medicine gave Dr. McPherson an idea he couldn’t shake. During medical school rotations, he came across orthopedic hand surgery.
“I loved it at first sight,” said Dr. McPherson.
Today, Dr. McPherson is an orthopedic surgeon at Avera Orthopedics in Sioux Falls, SD. He specializes in the care and treatment of conditions and injuries related to the hand, wrist and elbow.
“I am fortunate that I love what I do,” he said. “I love caring for patients, the field is fun and interesting, and I’m surrounded by supportive staff.”
Expert Orthopedic Hand Surgery
Dr. McPherson offers expert care to his patients to relieve pain, stiffness and weakness in the muscles, bones and joints from the fingertips to the elbow. Some of the conditions he cares for include:

Military Experience
Dr. McPherson used his skills to serve in the military. After training at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, he spent one year as an orthopedic surgeon on Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He then returned to the Navy hospital as a staff surgeon in the resident training program.
Minneapolis Experience
Most of Dr. McPherson’s career was spent in Minneapolis, MN, where he was the hand surgery consultant for the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Wild. In addition to his regular practice, he had an academic appointment to the University of Minnesota as an Associate Clinical Professor and was an active teacher in the Orthopedic Residency and Hand Surgery Fellowship programs. Dr. McPherson also spent one day a week working at the Minneapolis Veteran’s Affairs taking care of veterans.
Active Lifestyle
When he is not working, Dr. McPherson enjoys spending time with family and his wife, golfing, traveling, and being outdoors hiking or kayaking.
