Reconstructive and Diabetic Foot Surgery
Reconstructive surgery involves the latest techniques to help patients regain function or stability, reduce pain, or prevent further deformity or disease. There are many conditions that might necessitate surgery, from arthritis to injury to congenital conditions. Reconstructive surgery may include tendon repair/transfer, fusion of bone, bone grafting, soft tissue repair, osteotomy of bone (cutting of bones in a precise fashion), and use of fixation devices such as screws or pins to stabilize and repair bone.
Dr. Lonbaken has 23 years experience in diabetic foot surgery. He specializes in limb salvage, the specialty of preventing leg amputation. Dr. Lonbaken has a limb salvage program at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, S.D., which specializes in treating high-risk wounds and infections. The program has been very successful as Avera St. Mary’s has a very low leg amputation rate.
